Method Statement for draining down Groundbreaker over winter / severe weather
In compliance with Water Regulations Guidance Note G4.1; in extreme conditions any property which is unoccupied or only marginally heated for less than 12 hours a day, an owner should take precautions against damage to apparatus by freezing. This is particularly relevant to properties which are usually unoccupied through the winter eg caravans and temporary accommodation.
Whilst Groundbreaker is tested and verified as being compliant with Water Industry Standard 4-37-01 (resistant to freezing at -13degrees C for more than 5 days) see also water industry references, prolonged exposure to sub zero temperatures by the water meter inside Groundbreaker may cause damage to the manifold. To alleviate this, it is prudent to drain down the water supply system, remove the water meter and leave an “air gap” which will allow the expansion of ice should it occur without damage to Groundbreaker.
Simple actions to follow are as below:-
· Open door
· Turn control valve to closed position
· Turn stop valve inside property to closed position
· Remove water meter using “G” spanner or similar – set aside within Groundbreaker.
· Press down check valve (in meter port) to relieve back pressure
· Open stop valve inside property and allow system to drain down to waste.
· Replace Meter and tighten to hand tight + 1/8 turn.
(This should allow any water entrapped in system to expand if frosts occur without damaging apparatus)
· LEAVE STOP VALVE IN CLOSED POSITION
· Close and secure door to Groundbreaker
To reconnect the water service:· Open Groundbreaker door
· Open control valve
· Check for leaks, remediate as required
· Close Groundbreaker door
